You'll miss few refences, meet DLC characters for the first time (I believe, you'll have to play all Disgaea games to know them all (not including spin-offs), most of them aren't ported to PC) and that's about the difference between playing/not playing first two Disgaea games.In addition, the trailer, the third video published by Nippon Ichi software ahead of the new game’s premiere, it showcases fantastic graphics work from developer Vanillaware. If you only care about D5 then not really. Order will be (to know all characters) like Phantom Brave (can be played any time 'till 4), Disgaea 1, La Pucelle (optional, introducing Prier/Priere), Makai Kingdom (optional, introducing Zetta, Pram), GrimGrimoire (very optional, introducing Lujei (soul nomad secret character)), Soul Nomad (optional, introducing Gig, Revya) Disgaea d2, Disgaea 2, Disgaea 3,4,5. Don't really remember about third one) will lead to really messed up moments.
Not gonna spoil much, but taking bad rotes in those three (in case of D2, you'll have to team kill at least 100 members of your group. Also, you'll have to finish game once before you'll be able to go bad route) or D2/D3 'till bad ending.
If you're looking for some kind of serious story, the you probably should play Soul Nomad (be aware that it's a strategy game way more than RPG.
Or on PS2, they're really cheap now), and obviosly all other Disgaea games (they all are great). In that case, you can also play Phantom Brave (ported to PC), Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad & the World Eaters (my personal favorite), La Pucelle tactics, GrimGrimoire (last four games can run perfectly on PCSX2 if you can find/have a copy. Both are great (I personally like d2 more than first, especially "friendly fire ending").
